Piazza del Duomo

The square houses the most important monuments of the town, Palazzo del Podestà (that houses the Town Hall and the Civic Museum) and the Duomo, Basilica Collegiata di S. Maria Assunta (12thC) whose inner walls are covered with beautiful frescoes with scenes of the Old and the New Testament by artists of the Sienese and Florentine School. The Duomo also houses the Chapel of Santa Fina, with fine frescoes by Domenico Ghirlandaio. Opposite the Duomo there is the old Podestà Palace surmounted by the Rognosa Tower that belonged to the Ghibelline Salvucci family, bitter enemies of the Guelph Ardinghellis, whose houses stood in the adjoining square with the “Twin” Towers.
